Distractions
December 30th 2006 09:44
Well it has been a while since I have posted anything and there is a list of excuses I could give you. These include having been interstate, helping to host two workshops, being tired, simply forgetting and then of course the big one, Christmas.
It has helped me reflect on how we create excuses to prevent us from dealing with something. I like to call them distractions. It is interesting to see how and what we create to distract us. This last month for instance I have been observing myself not posting on my blog. I have also observed myself not doing any exercise. Ok so rain can be a good excuse to not go for a walk, but distracting myself by reading and then realizing it is too dark?
At the heart of a lot of distractions lies an element of self-abuse or self-destruction. I find distraction to not exercise and I stay overweight. I find distraction to not write and my creativity stagnates.
We create so many amazing games to limit ourselves when our truths are so much grander. Our minds are conditioned to doubt and criticize and not just ourselves. How many times have you shared an idea to have it crushed by someone’s negativity? And why would you let someone else limit you anyway. These are games we start from an early age and are masters of by our teens.
Can we be brave enough to start to see the games and stop playing them?

Today I was able to sit and listen to someone rattle off a whole list of excuses for why they can't resolve something. Interesting that they can put so much energy into why they can't do something ...and won't invest any energy into creating a solution.

I wrote an entire article a while back (not on orble, but for another resource) about the games people play - half of which we don't even recognize we're playing because it's become so commonplace. Making people feel guilty is one of the worst. Now, when someone tries to guilt me into doing something, I just giggle and say, "Pack your bags, we're going on a guilt trip!"
I like the way you think.

I loved the "pack your bags, we are going on a guilt trip"
line. It is amazing how when you stop playing the games people will leave you as there is always someone willing to play.

It's true that we need to be brave to face some of these things. Let's face it sometimes it's easier to stay in the same spot rather than doing some work and forging ahead.
